Always use water as a coolant to extend the life of your drill bit. For hand drills start your bit at a 45 degree angle and create a channel. This keeps the bit from skipping around the surface. After you have a channel started, move to an upright 90 degree angle slowely. The channel will stablilize the drill bit so it doesn't skip. Think of it like a track on a sliding door.
